About Us - Our "Gallery of Artists" includes over 40 talented local contributors working in all mediums.

Pen & paper, paint & canvas, wood, stone & wool, our artists excel in many different methods of expression of the world they see around them.

Our Gallery's home, the "old Selmah Schoolhouse", is close to 190 years old and originally served the community as a two room school house.

Video clip is in Shockwave flash format; please allow time to load and size your viewing screen down for best image quality.The School operated for 96 years and it was reported to the Superintendent of Schools that "in terms of structure and style, the Selmah School was one of the most outstanding rural schools in Nova Scotia".

All works displayed in the Gallery are available for sale through the Gallery, but we also offer a selection of affordable works of art that make great souvenirs of your visit.

Thursdays in July and August 10:30 to 12:00 are Art Talk Thursdays. Join us to talk about art, the occasional demonstration, critiques or just have a coffee!

2010 Workshops:

Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain - an introduction to the five basic skills of drawing - This 2 session workshop with instructor Judy Arsenault promises lots of fun and a relaxed, entertaining approach to several basic drawing exercises.  Coffee and tea provided, bring your own snacks or lunch.

Judy is an artist living in Maitland, she has a BFA in fine Arts from NSCAD University and a strong background in drawing and printmaking before turning to watercolour, acrylics and now encaustic. She has worked in the Nova Scotia Art Bank and the County of Colchester Permanent Collections.

Friday August 6 and Friday August 13, 9:30 to 12:30

Fee - $35 includes materials.


Pastels for beginners - with Maitland artist Susan Sweet. This one day workshop is intended for artists of any level who are new to the pastel medium. The introduction includes safety issues and a short demonstration. Most of the day will be spent trying the pastels and a variety of paper. The fee includes materials, but participants are encouraged to bring any pastels they may have and the class will share our supplies during the day.  Coffee and tea provided, bring a lunch, we have a small kitchen with fridge and microwave.

Fee - $40 includes materials


Draw and paint Animals - This one day workshop with instructor Susan Sweet is intended for artists of any level who would like to learn how to or improve on their skills in depicting animals in their artwork. A mix of drawing and painting, participants are encouraged to bring their own materials and photos for subject matter. There will also be a supply of subject matter supplied. A fun, relaxing day geared for the animal lovers.  Coffee and tea provided, bring a lunch, we have a fridge and microwave on site.

Susan Sweet is a Maitland artist who has a BFA from NSCAD University. She has many years of experience painting animals in pastel, oil and acrylic.
Susan has work in the Nova Scotia Art Bank.

All workshops require a minimum of 8 participants, maximum of 12. Fees are due on August 1, payable to “Susan Sweet”. Mail to 8443 Highway 215 RR 1, Maitland, Nova Scotia B0N 1T0. Please call the gallery at 261-2151 or Susan at 261-2036 for more information or email: animalart@ns.sympatico.ca.

All workshops take place in Gallery 215, 8247 Highway 215, which will remain open while we work. We have lots of natural light and a few clamp lights, work tables and chairs. Please bring a table top easel or standing easel if you have one. There will be a limited few available to use.  Course outline will be available after registration.
